About Us

Darton, Longman and Todd was established in 1959 by Tim Darton, Michael Longman and John Todd, who shared two convictions. One was the belief that the time was ripe for the first-ever Bible in contemporary English. The other was that many people still wanted to read serious works on religion – far more than was properly supposed in many publishing houses. The publication of the Jerusalem Bible turned us almost overnight from a struggling, obscure company to one with an international reputation, a reputation we have constantly enhanced with our rapidly expanding list of some of the most prestigious thinking on religion of our time.

We passed our fiftieth birthday (2009), having established ourselves as the UK’s leading independent publisher of high quality, popular books on spirituality, religion and theology. We are also unique amongst UK religious publishers in being jointly managed by all our staff members as a common ownership company:

DLT is not a Catholic publisher or a Protestant publisher or an Anglican publisher. We don’t think of ourselves as traditional or progressive, conservative or liberal.

Our books come from many different backgrounds and traditions, but they all share a relish for opening up argument and debate, a realisation that all are invited to celebrate the things of God, and a desire to reach people and to learn from them, not to exclude them. At DLT, we’re always looking for writers.

At DLT, we’re always looking for writers with freshness, inquisitiveness, faithfulness and passion.

The world is fragile. And it is impossible to understand the world if you do not understand religion. DLT books will not tell you what to think. But they might change the way you see the world, and they might even change the way you live.
