6. Authors & Freelance
6.1 How do I submit a manuscript or book proposal?
We receive several manuscripts and proposals for consideration each week. We reply to everyone who writes to DLT as quickly as we can, but you might have to wait a few weeks before hearing from us.
Please submit any proposals or finished manuscripts for consideration as hard copy (we are not able to accept manuscripts, proposals, or queries sent by e-mail, or texts sent as CDs) to our Editorial Department at Darton, Longman and Todd, 1 Spencer Court, 140-142 Wandsworth High Street, London SW18 4JJ.
Please see F.A.Q no.8 for our full list of submissions guidelines.
6.2 Are there any guidelines for submitting a manuscript or proposal to DLT?
If you wish to have a proposal or a finished manuscript considered for publication by DLT please send the following material as hard copy (we are not able to accept manuscripts, proposals, or queries sent by e-mail, or texts sent as CDs):
- A brief letter telling us why you have approached DLT in particular as a possible publisher. We also ask that you tell us if you are submitting your material simultaneously to another publisher.
-
A proposal: there's no perfect blueprint for a successful book proposal but here are some of the elements it should include:
- Content: 300 or so enticing words telling us what the book is about
- Target readership: who are you writing for?;
- A table of contents, with a line or two describing the contents of each chapter
- A line or two about you, and your qualifications for writing the book
- A line or two about the possible competition, ie books at a similar level and aimed at a similar readership;
- The extent and (if the work is not yet completed) the estimated delivery date
- A sample chapter (not the complete manuscript) - or an example of your work in a similar register to the planned book
-
Don't forget to include a stamped, self-addressed envelope if you wish to have the material returned. Please send your submission to:
Editorial Department
Darton, Longman and Todd
1 Spencer Court
140-142 Wandsworth High Street
London SW18 4JJWe will do our very best to reply to you within four weeks of receiving your proposal. If we ask to see the complete manuscript it could be several weeks before we are able to make a decision on it, especially if we seek an outside reader's opinion. We regret that the great volume of material we receive simply does not allow us to comment in detail on those manuscripts we are unable to accept.
