JULY
NEWS Newman to be declared ‘Blessed’ this year Cardinal Jose Saraiva Martins, Prefect of the Congregation for the Cause of the Saints, has said that the beatification of Cardinal Newman – the last stage on the step to canonisation – is imminent, and may happen this year. This suggests that the Vatican is satisfied that claims that the cure of a 69-year-old American from a crippling spinal condition after praying to Cardinal Newman was miraculous. This announcement from Rome coincides with the publication of John Henry Newman: A Mind Alive by Roderick Strange.

After years of study and discussion among themselves, and with men and women at the very centre of national politics, the authors look at compassion with a vigorous new perspective. They place compassion at the heart of a Christian life in a world governed far too long by principles of power and destructive control. Compassion, no longer merely an eraser of human mistakes, is a force of prayer and action - the expression of God’s love for us and our love for God and one another. Donald McNeill and Douglas Morrison have revised the text of this classic of the spiritual life, first published in 1982; Henri Nouwen died in 1996. ECO-THEOLOGY, £14.95, Celia Deane-Drummond. ‘I’ve read it in manuscript: now I want the book! Here is theology earthed. Celia plants the planet firmly within the providence of God. This book is popular in its appeal and scholarly in its depth. It connects with the environmental agenda and stretches the reader to reach new heights of understanding on this vitally important subject.’ The Rt Revd James Jones, Bishop of Liverpool
